Planning a surprise proposal for someone who doesn’t like surprises is a strategic challenge. With Allyssa hating surprises, I thought our anniversary would be an obvious day for a proposal—but somehow, she was still completely caught off guard.
On our 10-year anniversary, we followed our usual tradition of exchanging gifts. As always, I had to prepare an entire arsenal of presents since our anniversary, Christmas, and her birthday all collide in one financially devastating stretch of the calendar. Allyssa, on the other hand, casually tossed me her gift, completely unaware that this particular celebration would be different.
While she was thinking nothing of it, I was already on one knee, telling her how much she means to me and how important it was for me to take this next step. Somehow, despite the "obvious timing," she was so surprised that she doesn’t even remember if she said yes (she did…obviously).
We then went to Firefly in Studio City to celebrate over sparkling wine, steak, and, of course, ice cream, because what better way to wrap up an unforgettable day than with dessert? — Chu
